Bessengue, a quarter in the city
Bessengue is a popular quarter of Douala. Created in a not structured urbanization, part of the quarter is in fact
enclosed between transportation routes, the railway station and a drain.
The population is made of people comming from different regions, some will say it's a 'multiethnic' quarter
but I have as for me a certain aversion for the concept of ethnos group, even if it should be recognized
that it covers a certain reality in Cameroun.
Everyday life in this quater is not allways easy.
The running water remains there a luxury, the evacuations are almost non-existent,
the intern access roads also.
However, for several years, under the impulse of the ONG Doual'art
and with the support of the local authorities, actions have been undertaken to improve the living
conditions in the district. Clearing out of the drain, rebuilding of footbridges, construction of
terminals fountains and various socio-cultural interventions are some of the projects concluded.
Actions whose most tangible results are a reduction in the frequency of the floods, sometimes fatal,
a real opening, in particular of youth and a will, always to reinforce, to work for the common wellbeing.
The Community radio "Bessengue City"
" Bessengue City " is a Community project of radio in which I took part and who allowed me to discover this
district a little. I hope not to betray his inhabitants in this small turn of the district...
